Review of mental health support for young people in Polmont

The Independent Care Review welcomes the announcement of an independent review of mental health and support services for young people in HM Prison & Young Offenders Institution Polmont.

On 15 November, Independent Care Review Chair Fiona Duncan wrote to Cabinet Secretary for Justice Humza Yousaf and Minister for Children and Young People Maree Todd regarding the ongoing work of the Independent Care Review in related areas.

In January 2019, the Independent Care Review will assume responsibility for the forward-looking work previously being considered by the Secure Care Strategic Board. This transition is currently underway.

Commenting on the announcement of the review of the provision of mental health services and support for young people entering and in custody at Polmont, Independent Care Review Chair Fiona Duncan said:

“It is vital that all children and young people who come into contact with the ‘care system’ are assessed and receive immediate and comprehensive support that meets individual needs. Rights must be upheld and every young person must be treated with dignity by all professionals.
The Independent Care Review will continue to strive to create lasting positive change for infants, children and young people who experience what is known as Scotland’s ‘care system’.”
